Polyvinyl chloride). PVC is a recyclable material and it also helps to save our precious forest resources from being depleted. PVC decking materials are much more resistant to abrasions, scratches and stains than the majority of other decking materials available today. There is a reasonable amount of colors, textures and installation systems available.

Do to the use of wood fibers and recycled plastics they are more susceptible to staining, scratching and fading There is a wide range of colors, textures and installation systems available.

Softwood Decking Materials
If you prefer the look and feel of real wood redwood and cedar are obvious choices.

Cedar Decking
Cedar is extremely popular material in decking because it is naturally resistant to insect infestation, rot and fungal decay. Over time the cedar will develop a grey type coloring if left untreated. Treated you can expect cedar decking to last a long time, typically from 15 to 25 years depending on use and frequency of maintenance.

Redwood Decking
Redwood has been the decking material choice for many years in the United States. Hundreds of thousands of redwood decks have been built in the west alone. However, redwood use in decking has been dropping in resent years. Redwood cultivation rates have changed making hart lumber more expensive than ever. As a result the quality of the "construction" grades has been liberalized, old growth redwoods are being saved and new growth redwoods are being harvested. These new growth trees are small, yielding a higher concentration of knots and sapwood.

In Colorado do to our high elevation and dry climate, woods like redwood and Cedar need to be sealed annually or bi-annually in order to maintain their natural beauty.

Exotic Wood Decking Materials

Exotic Decking
There are a number of exotic lumber species used in deck construction today. These woods are also naturally resistant to insect infestation, rot and fungal decay. These exotic woods are more expensive and much more labor intensive than other decking alternatives, however they offer a unique, one of a kind  deck that is sure to impress all.

Pressure Treated Lumber

Pressure Treated Lumber
Pressure Treated Lumber has become very common in today’s building practices. Revolutionized by Dr. Karl Wolman over 80 years ago.  Deck substructures (the structural framing component of the deck) is probably the most common place you might find pressure treated lumber in residential construction. Although it can be used as surface decking plank it's not as cosmetically appealing as a lot of other choices, and is probably not the best choice if you have young children.  More About Pressure Treated Woods
